Es ist ultrabequem: ein wenig surfen, ein paar Klicks und schon hat man sich die gewünschte Schallplatte zum Bestpreis gesichert und wenige Tage später bringt sie der Postbote - man muss erst gar nicht mehr aus dem Haus. Aber Hand aufs Herz, ist das alles, was einen Schallplatten-Liebhaber ausmacht? LPs horten per Versand? Ich möchte hier die Unterschiede zwischen Plattenladen und Online-Händler aufzeigen, dann kann sich jeder selbst eine Meinung bilden.

TC Helicon Critical Mass – Vocal FX Pedal für die Bühne

Ihr steht am Mikro, aber die Band will die Hooklines im Refrain einfach nicht mitsingen? TC Electonic hat mit dem Critical Mass ein Effektpedal für Sänger veröffentlicht, das euch neben Gang-Gesang auf Knopfdruck noch weitere Effekte liefert.
Grundlegend lässt sich das Critical Mass Pedal auf drei integrierte Effekte reduzieren: Chor bzw. Gang-Vocals, Reverb und Tone (EQ). Dazu gibt TC Helicon drei Regler an die Hand: Style, Mix und Reberb. Letzterer regelt in drei Bereichen (Room, Club, Hall) oder ist aus. Mix reicht von Lead (Dry) bis Crowd (Wet) und Style schaltet einen von acht Modi ein: Jeweils Unison, Octave Up, Octave Down und Up & Down in den Kategorien Melodic und Gang.
Dazu gesellt sich ein Druckschalter namens Tone, der den Adaptive Tone einschaltet, der schon in älteren Pedalen zum Einsatz kommt. Es handelt sich um einen intelligenten Modus, der den Sound klarer, voller und verständlicher machen soll.
Wer also nur alleine singt, gern mal stimmliche Unterstützung bekommen würde, aber sonst keinen Backgroundgesang findet, könnte hier mal vorbei schauen. Vielleicht auch lieber selbst testen, als das eher merkwürdige Video anschauen. TC kann doch Videos machen, warum ist ja jetzt plötzlich eins mit Stereotypen vollgepackt und eher peinlich als informativ? Vielleicht sehe ich das auch nur zu eng?

Anschlüsse

Die Anzahl an Ein- und Ausgängen ist übersichtlich: Ein XLR In, ein XLR Out, Stromanschluss – wahlweise auch über Mini-USB oder Batterien, und fertig. Viel mehr würde ich von einem Live-Effektpedal auch nicht erwarten.

149 Euro soll das Critical Mass Pedal kosten. Es soll noch im April ausgeliefert werden und beim Händler eures Vertrauens verfügbar sein. Thomann hat es bereits für den 28. April gelistet.

Der Teufel für Gregor Hilden – Okko Diablo GH Signature

Der Blues-Gitarrist Gregor Hilden hat sich mit Okko zusammen getan und eine eigene Version vom Okko-Pedal gebaut – mit einigen Veränderungen zum altbekannten Serienmodell. Seit Anfang April gibt es die Videos auf Gregs YouTube-Kanal, nun ist das Pedal selbst auch lieferbar.
Die Anzahl der Regler ist gewachsen, auf dem Okko Diablo GH Signature befinden sich Dyn, Feed, Body, Tone, Gain und Level für die Drive-Sektion und Boost und Tone für die Boost-Sektion. Dazu gesellen sich zwei kleine Hebel Input und Mods, die in jeweils drei Stufen das Signal weiter anpassen. Der Boost ist übrigens ausschließlich nach dem Drive geschaltet und die Gain-Parameter sind fix – Boost regelt lediglich das Mastervolume für die Sektion.
Das Pedal wird mit einem 9-Volt Netzteil betrieben, hat intern zusätzlich eine Charge-Pump, also einen Spannungsverdoppler. Der Dyn-Regler ist mit mit 6-18V beschriftet und hat so Einfluss auf den Headroom und die Kompression des Pedals.
Klingt für mich nach einem guten Update für das in die Jahre gekommene Pedal – was ja nicht heißt, dass es dadurch schlecht wird. Leider hat es die für Okko typische große LED mit „Hörnchen“ nicht auf das GH Signature Diablo geschaft.
249 Euro kostet das Okko Diablo GH Signature inklusive Steuern und Versand direkt ab Okko (Leipzig). Die Videos klingen auf jeden Fall sehr gut in meinen Ohren – mir ist nur der Grundsound etwas zu hell, aber das ist Geschmackssache, andere stehen genau da drauf.

Gute Nachrichten für Besitzer älterer Apple Hardware. Für diese Nutzer sind die Apps der iWork- sowie iLife-Suite ab sofort kostenlos erhältlich.

iMovie, GarageBand und iWork-Apps ab sofort für alle Nutzer kostenlos

Wir spulen rund 3,5 Jahre zurück. Im September 2013 ist Apple dazu übergegangen die Apps der iWork- und iLife-Suite kostenlos anzubieten. Einen kleinen Haken gab es allerdings. Nur Kunden, die seit diesem Zeitpunkt ein neues iOS-Gerät oder einen neuen Mac gekauft haben, profitierten von dem kostenlosen Download, so dass iMovie, GarageBank, Pages, Numbers und Keynote gratis heruntergeladen werden konnten.
Dies ändert sich mit dem heutigen Tag. Wie Macrumors berichtet, bietet Apple ab sofort die Apps der iLife- und iWork-Suite als Gratis-Download für Jedermann an. Somit profitieren auch Kunden von dem kostenlosen Download, die schon seit längerem keine neue Apple Hardware mehr gekauft haben. Zwar werden viele Kunden seit Ende 2013 bereits einen neuen Mac, ein iPhone, iPad oder einen iPod touch gekauft haben, allerdings gibt es sicherlich noch einige Kunden, die halt noch ältere Hardware einsetzen und nun auch profitieren.

‘The Last Jedi’ Teaser Trailer Is Here At Last

“What do you see?” asks Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in a whispery narrative during what we can assume is Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) training with the exiled Jedi master. “Light… darkness… the balance,” she replies, over a montage of images soon to be found in the new teaser trailer for director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
While it’s extremely light on plot details — as teaser trailers are notorious for being — it should be enough to tide over fans who were growing increasingly anxious over the lack of any information about the eighth installment of what’s been dubbed the Star Wars Skywalker Saga.
What we do get are a host of images hinting at where the story will be going after 2015’s record-shattering The Force Awakens. From the shots of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher, R.I.P.) staring at a hologram, Finn (John Boyega) still in a coma, Poe’s (Oscar Isaac) custom X-Wing being destroyed in a hangar, and Kylo Ren’s (Adam Driver) broken mask, it’s a veritable smorgasbord of images fans have come to know and love over the years.
Of course, the moment that’s going to leave the biggest impact — and launch a thousand fan theories between now and Christmas — is Luke’s silhouetted figure explains that the one truth he knows is “it’s time for the Jedi… to end.” Does this mean Luke will be ending thousands of years of tradition he was so hell-bent on resurrecting after the events in Return of the Jedi, or does it speak to the larger prophecy about the need to bring balance to The Force? We won’t know for sure until December, but it’ll be fun as hell trying to figure it out until then.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th.

Malekko Scrutator Review – Best Bitcrusher/Filter Pedal?

In order for your guitar to make sense to your computer, its signal has to be converted to a series of numbers that represent the crests and troughs of the waveform. These are called samples; the higher the sample rate, the more high-range frequencies can be accurately expressed. Those samples are then recorded as on/off memory bits that contain the volume information of the waveform. The more bits, the less compressed and more nuanced your signal will be. Bitcrushers take advantage of this music-computer relationship by taking your analog signal into it’s loving, digital arms and manipulating the sample rate and bit depth to create an increasingly crude compression/distortion effect.
If you’re confused, you’re not alone. It was only recently that I became sure I understood the bitcrusher, and I’m still not sure I’m not afraid of it. The bitcrusher sits somewhere between overdrive and Armageddon machine, yielding surreal warmth at its most conservative and absolute mangled mush at the extremes. Originating as a popular offering in the realm of plugin software, a glut of savvy pedal builders have thrown their hat in the bitcrusher ring, reproducing and building on the effect in amazing and unexpected ways.
One such builder is Malekko Heavy Industry, a company one could describe as “enigmatic.” Today we’re taking a look at Malekko’s Scrutator, the first in a series of (so far, three) new units designed with Malekko’s proprietary DSP platform. The word “Scrutator” is an old, almost never used word which means “one who examines,” an appropriate nomenclature for a pedal designed to reduce your signal to its basest attributes and lay bare the grating nature of the bits below.

Getreu dem Motto: Der Endzustand meines Pedalboards ist der Anfang vom neuen Pedalboard.

Die Variante "daheim" nun folgendermaßen:

Vom Flashback geht es dann Stereo zum Mixer/Inetface/DAW.

Das Flint liegt nun nach dem EQ aber vor dem Chorus und Delay. Im Unterschied zur Version 11.1.2017 hab ich somit das Flint auf beiden Chorus/Delay Stereo-Kanälen.
Damit das Setup flexibel bleibt springe ich nun immer zwischen großem und kleinem Board. Es lässt sich schon erkennen, dass das kleine Board mit Boss LS-Preamp-Flint als flexibles Modul abnehmbar gehalten ist. Ein gewisses Maß an Umsteckerei bleibt mir aber nicht erspart.

Apple empfiehlt iCloud-Einstellungen nach iOS 10.3 Update zu prüfen

Vor etwas mehr als einer Woche hat Apple die finale Version von 10.3 für iPhone, iPad und iPod touch veröffentlicht. Das Update bringt allerhand neue Funktionen mit sich und zudem wurden zahlreiche Sicherheitslücken geschlossen. Mittlerweile liegt iOS 10.3.1 vor, welches sich um eine WiFi-Sicherheitslücke kümmert. Allerdings scheint sich rund um iOS 10.3 ein weiterer kleiner Bug eingeschlichen zu haben, auf den Apple aktuell in einer Mail aufmerksam macht.

iOS 10.3 kann verschiedene iCloud-Einstellungen reaktivieren

Vielleicht habt ihr es schon bemerkt, vielleicht aber auch noch nicht. In einigen Fällen vergisst iOS 10.3 nach dem Update eure iCloud-Einstellungen und reaktiviert Einstellungen, die ihr eigentlich deaktiviert habt.
Auf diesen Umstand informiert Apple aktuell seine Kunden mit einer Mail. So schreibt uns Mathias (Danke), dass er eine entsprechende Mail von Apple erhalten hat. Es heißt

Hallo XYZ,
in dem kürzlich veröffentlichten iOS 10.3 Update wurde ein Problem gefunden, welches eine kleine Anzahl von iCloud-Usern betrifft. Dieses könnte versehentlich wieder einige iCloud-Dienste eingeschaltet haben, die vorher auf deinem Gerät deaktiviert waren.
Daher empfehlen wir, auf deinem Gerät in den iCloud-Einstellungen zu prüfen, dass nur die von dir gewünschten Dienste eingeschaltet sind.
Mehr zum Thema iCloud-Einstellungen oder wende dich bei weiteren Fragen an AppleCare.

Audiobus 3 launched – iconic iOS music app moves to v.3.0

As I’ve posted recently, long-standing iOS music makes have been waiting with some anticipation for the the arrival of Audiobus 3. Well, the wait is now over; Audiobus 3 arrived on the App Store this morning.
As promised by the Audiobus team, the new version has three new headline features. First, the app provides MIDI routing between compatible apps, making it easier to configure your overall arrangement of apps within a specific Audiobus project.

Audiobus 3 has arrived…. along with new MIDI and mixing features accessible via the tab buttons at the base of the main screen.

Second, Audiobus will now support Audio Unit plugins as well as Audiobus and IAA compatible apps. This is obviously an important development given that AU is now making considerable progress under iOS and, for some iOS musicians, is perhaps meaning that an app such as Audiobus might be less critical in their workflow. Adding AU support means that you can get the best of both worlds within Audiobus; it’s proven app connectivity features and access to all the new AU apps.

Audiobus now supports AU instruments and effects including, of course, multiple instances.

Third, Audiobus 3 includes an input mixer allowing you to balance volumes of all your audio sources. Again, this is a very useful addition, particularly for those using Audiobus within a performance context and running multiple apps; it makes it much easier to control the balance of their various audio outputs from a single, convenient, screen.

The AU support provides access to the instrument (or effects) AU control panel from within Audiobus itself.

The combination of these new features, alongside the inter-app audio connectivity that Audiobus already provides, plus the fact that all your project configurations will be saved for instant recall, will, of course, allow Audiobus 3 to perform a much more comprehensive role as an ‘music app hub’ than the current version. Current Audiobus users will, therefore, undoubtedly be very keen to start using the new version.
Anyway, you can download now. The app requires iOS10.2 or later, is universal, a 47MB download and is priced at UK£9.99/US$9.99. There are no IAPs to purchase; all features are included in the base price of the app. And if you don’t wish to move to the new version, Audiobus 2 is going to stay on the App Store as a separate product.

Audiobus 3 includes basic mixing features for your various audio sources.

I think ‘new product’ – as opposed to ‘free update’ – is inevitable for such a major update to Audiobus, both in terms of starting with fresh code (and only having to carry a minimum of backwards compatibility stuff into the new code?) and an income stream to support the considerable development time involved. Given what the Audiobus team have given to the iOS music making community over recent years, I don’t think we can have too many complaints about this approach.
Also launched today and eight new MIDI-based apps from Midiflow development team and that are designed specifically to make use of the new MIDI routing features within Audiobus 3. These look like very useful utility apps and I’ll post a separate news item on these later today….

There are also a new range of Midiflow app released today for use with Audiobus 3.

Of course, there are alternatives. While Audiobus was perhaps an essential app for every iOS musician for a number of years, with the advent of Audio Units in iOS9 (and the somewhat wider adoption of AUv.3 with iOS10) and the launch of AUM back in February 2016, some iOS music makers have adopted a different route to their inter-app connectivity. Indeed, given the headline features of AUM – IAA/AU/Audiobus app hosting, MIDI routing, mixer, flexible audio routing – it will make for an interesting comparison between the detailed specifications in each of these areas when I get around to doing a full review of Audiobus 3.

Die anderen Effektpedale sind ziemlich wahrscheinlich Tender Octaver Pro, Mod Factory Pro und Baby Bomb. Hoffentlich haben sie auch die Ocean Machine im Gepäck.

Red Truck

Der Multieffekt, der seit 2016 in der Gerüchteküche dank Reddit-Leak für Furore sorgt, ist wieder einmal dabei: Red Truck. Mit einem roten Laster assoziiere ich in der Regel eine Marketingaktion für ein koffein- und kohlensäurehaltiges Erfrischungsgetränk. Hier sind die Fußschalter die „Räder“, die Grafiken der einzelnen Abteilungen tun ihr Übriges.
Mit dabei sind Booster, Overdrive, Distortion, Modulation, Delay, Reverb und ein Fußschalter für Tap (Tempo) unter dem Führerhäuschen. Da ist eigentlich alles dabei, was man als Gitarrist effektiv braucht – nur ein Wah vermisse ich. Aber vielleicht gibt es dazu irgendwann noch eine passende Version mit „Laderampe“. Ein Tuner ist ebenfalls dabei.
Interessant sind FX-Loop und Stereo Out neben einem DI-Out mit Boxensimulation. Das Red Truck Effektpedal soll im Handel 200-250 USD kosten. Das geht in Ordnung für die Masse an (hoffentlich gut klingenden) Effekten.

Tender Octaver Pro & Mod Factory Pro

Bei den Beiden handelt es sich um Pedale der Twin Serie. Nicht, weil zwei Effekte drin stecken, sondern weil die Gehäuse zwei Fußschalter haben. Der Tender Octaver Pro ist allem Anschein nach eine überarbeitete Version des verbotenen Tender Octaver, der aufgrund einer Klage von Electro Harmonix zusammen mit dem Mooergan vom Markt genommen werden musste. Die Pro Version hat neben dem On/Off-Fußschalter einen weiteren für Preset und Regler für Sub, Upper – beide jeweils mit Tone und Level – dazu weitere für Dry und Smooth (für automatische Lautstärke-Swells). Vier Presets sind speicherbar. Mittig kann man die Modi umschalten: Upper, Sub oder beide.
Das Pedal Mod Factory Pro ist ganz ähnlich aufgebaut, außer dass man hier zwischen insgesamt 16 Effekten wählen kann und diese über den Modi-Schalter seriell A+B, B+A oder parallel A links und B rechts ausführen kann. Für „Kanal“ A und B gibt Mooer jeweils Regler für Speed, Depth und Contour an die Hand.
Pro Pedal sollen an der Ladentheke 169 USD fällig werden. In Deutschland haben sich die Twin-Pedale bei ca. 150 Euro eingependelt.

Baby Bomb

Klein und unscheinbar, ob Bombe oder nicht: Baby Bomb ist eine Endstufe mit 30 Watt. Die Ausstattung ist spartanisch mit einem einsamen Regler für Volume und einem kleinen Hebel, mit dem man den Grundklang zwischen Bright und Warm umschalten kann.
Bisher konnte mich diese Art Pedale nicht überzeugen, ich bezweifle, dass es Mooer mit dem Baby Bomb schafft. Aber ich werde es trotzdem mal ausprobieren. Für 109 USD eine 30 Watt Endstufe mit angeblich röhrenähnlichem Klang fürs Pedalboard – warum nicht?

Der perfekte Mac Mini kommt von HP?

Nichts ahnend surft man auf IT Fachseiten, man will ja immer aktuell sein, auf der Suche nach Hardware, die demnächst so in den DAW-Rechner gepackt werden könnte. Da ploppt ein schwarzer Mac Mini im Sichtfeld auf. Moment … das ist nicht die kommende Generation von Apple! Sondern der Elite Slice von HP. Je mehr ich darüber lese, desto mehr wünsche ich mir genau diesen Computer für meine Arbeit und DAW auch von Apple.

Mein Mac Mini

Als Fan der Mac Minis von 2012 war ich 2015 ziemlich enttäuscht vom Release der mittlerweile veralteten „neusten“ Generation. Vor allem die langsameren Dual Core Only CPUs haben mir einen herben Schlag in die Magengrube verpasst, vom bei euch beliebten Verlöten und Verkleben der Hardware ganz zu schweigen. Ich hatte meinen MM mit Quad Core i7 kurz vor Release noch verhökert, weil ich dachte, die fallen danach rapide im Preis. Pustekuchen. Meine Maschine hatte ich auf 16 GB RAM und eine 256 MB SSD plus 1 TB HDD aufgerüstet, verkauft für etwas unter 600. Was habe ich gekotzt, als ich die Preise für mein Maschinchen nach Release der 2015er Modelle auf über 1000 Euro habe klettern sehen. Aber so kam ich immerhin zum Hackintosh.

So könnte er aussehen

Jetzt habe ich bei Golem das Review der HP Elite Slice gelesen. Es ist gefühlt der Mac Mini, wie er schon immer sein sollte. Klein, leise, rechenstark, aufrüstbar – und modular. Richtig, es ist nichts verklebt (Schäm dich Apple!) und man kann es mit proprietären Teilen „Slices“ wie ein Sandwich erweitern. Also einfach ein fast baugleiches Teil zum Anschließen – von Apple kennen es vielleicht einige mit dem externen Laufwerk mit Mac Mini Maßen. Nur über einen ins Gehäuse eingelassenen Anschluss.
Aktuell gibt es nur zwei Zusatz-Slices: Laufwerk und Lautsprecher. RAM und Zusatz-CPU als Slice wären technisch wohl machbar, sind aktuell aber nicht erhältlich. Über genaue Pläne wird sich ausgeschwiegen Aber ich fände das einfach nur genial, wenn alles modular wäre: Alles ist kombinierbar und ohne Bastelarbeit auf den aktuellsten Stand anpassbar. Neue Generation CPU? Kein Problem, neuer Slice gekauft und gut. HP verbaut immerhin einen Quad Core i5 der Skylake Generation, der auch im straffen Dauerbetrieb leise gekühlt wird. Ein Mac Mini war auch leise, hob aber irgendwann gefühlt ab.

Modularer Mini Computer: So geht’s!

Go for it, FFS

Ein kleiner, leistungsstarker, energieeffizienter, unauffälliger, erweiterbarer Computer mit aktueller Hardware. Ganz einfach. Nur eben ohne OSX bzw. macOS, dem einzig Guten, was bei Apple aktuell noch für mich übrig ist. Bitte, liebes Apple, strafft euch mal! HP hat ja nicht nur die Slice PCs, sondern auch die Z2 Mini G3 ohne Mobil-Hardware, kostet mit 1400 Euro auch mehr, ist aber gefühlt 10x schneller als die Mac Minis. Die Gerüchteküche um die neuen Mac Minis kocht auch nicht so heiß, wie ich das gern hätte. Macht mal wieder was mit Innovation oder verkauft es als solche! Und wenn nicht, dann packt wenigstens mal potente, unverklebte Hardware rein, die wieder mehr als nur “Surfen und Tippen” kann. Die letzten Jahre war das nix und es sieht nach aktuellem Stand für die Zukunft auch nicht so gut aus. Aber Windows und Linux sind es für mich eben auch irgendwie nicht. Dann schiebe ich euch auch gern den nächsten Batzen Geld in den Gierschlund. Weil Mac Minis gibt es als Hackintosh nicht so, wie ich sie gern hätte.
