Kostenlos: Arturia Tape MELLO-FI bringt warmen LoFi-Sound

Arturia Tape MELLO-FI

Der Name deutet bereits an, was uns erwartet.

Free plug-ins: Arturia Tape MELLO-FI adds Mellotron tape goodness to anything

‘Tis the season to throw some wobbly retro tape qualities to your tracks on some holiday break time for all of us, hopefully. Arturia’s Tape MELLO-FI brings a full spectrum of distortion, lo-fi tape, and width and color options – for free through the end of the month.

There’s a lot of nice stuff happening in tape effects these days – at last, after a long time when such digital emulations tended to be relatively crude.

Tape MELLO-FI is nice both as it offers some modeled retro effects, and plenty of color and modulation options, too. I think the most satisfying approach with these tools is not to bury your channels under a bunch of gauze, but rather to get creative with them – especially since in-the-box software approaches afford you exactly that creative control.

In this case, Arturia worked on the behavior modeling from their Mellotron V and built it into a standalone effect. If you want retro personality, it does that, but it also offers precise controls for applying it as distortion and modulation.

Features:

  • Tape emulation and lo-fi effects processing
  • Noise, Flutter, Wow, Wear, and Mechanics controls
  • A tape wheel you can use to manipulate the actual tape mechanism – with Tape Stop (tempo-syced, no less) and the option of an Instant Tape catch-up
  • 12 dB low-pass and high-pass filter section
  • Stereo Width modulation offsets to Wow and Flutter to widen those effects

You also get 25 presets to get you started. (See image.)

This time, that skeuomorphic approach pays off, in that you get the effect of using this as a tape – and can even use tempo sync to make rhythmic patterns out of the results. So this can be glitchy and destructive, not only nostalgic.

It’s free for everybody; you just need an Arturia account and Arturia Software Center (and I’ve been busy loading ASC lately with all the updates that have been rolling through).

Tape MELLO-FI

There are some nice walkthroughs to fully understand each parameter…
…and plenty of presets to audition the range of what the effect can do.

For me, at least, this fits a nice spot next to some other options that similarly lend themselves to creativity (and creative abuse). I’m quite fond of BABY Audio’s TAIP (a reel-to-reel model based on machine learning that I find works really well as distortion) and Super VHS models. There’s some great stuff for Reaktor, including the free MRX90 which I wrote about last year. (There’s also reTape, which I haven’t even gotten to use yet, which takes a multi-effects approach.) AudioThing has a bunch of emulation tools, but going a totally different direction from Arturia and Mellotron, there’s the extreme distortion of the WIRES collaboration with Hainbach.

Oh yeah, and there are just actual cassette tapes, but I’m in the plug-in mode while I’m traveling.

It’s fascinating to have this stuff in the box, with controls that both emulate the real world and defy those physical realities. It also frees you to try sequences of processing you might not with the real gear.

And on that note, I’m off to play wit this one a bit more.

Get FREE Ozone Elements 9 With Beat Magazine!

Beat magazine (€5) is offering a free copy of Ozone Elements 9, along with a few other goodies, with their October 2020 issue.

For those unfamiliar, Beat is a popular German magazine about music production. Beat launched an English digital edition of the magazine earlier this year, so us non-German speaking readers can enjoy their excellent content, too.

We’ve covered iZotope’s Ozone Elements 9 numerous times on BPB. It was offered as a free download on several occasions in the past, and you can now get it for free once again with the latest Beat mag.

Ozone Elements 9 is by far the best way to get into mastering your music for free. It offers a set of essential mastering tools, including a parametric EQ, a limiter, and a stereo imager.

The equalizer module found in Ozone Elements 9 can work independently on your left and right channels and comes with two different modes – analog and digital. iZotope’s unique Imager module has a reputation all on its own and includes a Stereoizer tool to turn mono signals into stereo.

Last but not least, you’re getting the Maximizer module, one of the most critical parts of the mastering process. Ozone Elements 9 comes with two different Intelligent Release Control algorithms, autogain, an automatic “Learn Threshold,” and a slider for emphasizing transients.

Couple this with iZotope’s innovative Master Assistant feature, and you’re fully covered to start your mastering adventures. Always remember that mastering is something that takes years of practice to grasp fully, but hey, you do need to start somewhere.

So if you’ve missed previous Ozone Elements 9 promotions, here’s a chance to snag both Ozone and a ton of other goodies for cheap.

Beat Magazine’s October issue also comes with Subtraxx 5, their in-house trance synth, and Thorn Solo, a stripped-down (but still great-sounding) version of the hugely popular spectral synth, Thorn.

If that’s not enough for you, how about 11 additional GBs of acid basses, cinematic textures, build-ups and breakdowns, and foley for soundtracks, all from Prime Loops.

That’s a pretty good deal for €5!

The focus of this month’s issue is how to write and produce killer hooks, featuring interviews with Guetta, Vize, and Raf Camora, all artists who’ve broken into the eight and nine-digit realm with regards to views and plays.

Additional articles include a piece on breathing new life into your old hardware drum machines, a detailed breakdown on how to use Ozone, reviews of the Elektron Digitone Keys, a studio interview with Sub Focus and Wilkinson, tips on getting a great vocal recording setup, and my favorite, a deconstruction of Lady Gaga, which sounds awfully painful.

Again, this is all for just €5 for the digital edition. Beat magazine can be purchased from Falkemedia’s online shop and Zinio. It is an instant download. The October issue is available in both print and digital, with additional subscription options for 3 and 12 months.

vMPC2000XL Is A Free Akai MPC VST Plugin For Your DAW!

vMPC2000XL is an open-source emulation (unofficial) of the Akai MPC2000XL MIDI Production Center hardware sampler. The software is available as a standalone application, as well as a VST/VST3/AU plugin for compatible digital audio workstations on Windows, macOS, and Linux (support for Linus is experimental).
The original Akai MPC2000XL is a more technologically advanced take on the classic MPC60 sampler. Manufactured in the early 2000s, it provided the same intuitive Akai MPC workflow while offering more RAM memory, higher polyphony, and other hardware improvements. It did, however, retain the legendary groove and “feel” of the old-school MPC samplers.
The free vMPC2000XL plugin is a close emulation of the Akai MPC2000XL sampler. The software doesn’t emulate the signal path of the original hardware, so it doesn’t color the sound per se. However, it simulates the MPC’s digital voice filter. According to the info provided by the developer, this aspect of the emulation was “tweaked by ear” to resemble the hardware as closely as possible. On the other hand, the internal circuits are not emulated, so the samples won’t sound different simply because you’re playing them via this plugin. You might want to look into something like the SPre plugin for achieving that kind of effect.
More importantly, though, vMPC2000XL closely recreates the workflow of the Akai MPC2000XL hardware. Every menu screen and software feature is modeled after the original instrument. As a result, you’re getting an authentic Akai MPC2000XL experience in software format. The vMPC2000XL interface is certainly not the most intuitive in this age of virtual instruments and VST plugins. That said, it is a great way to experience the classic MPC beat-making workflow.
vMPC2000XL can be downloaded completely free of charge from the project page. The source code is also available. To use the plugin version of the instrument, the standalone application must be installed first (comes in a separate installer).
More info: vMPC2000XL (28.6 MB download size, EXE installer, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/VST3/AU plugin format for Windows, macOS, Linux)

Entwickler bleiben zu Hause, Produktionsstraßen stehen still.

WAVE-LITE Is A FREE Wavetable Synthesizer For HALion Sonic SE

Sample Fuel has released WAVE-LITE, a fully featured wavetable synthesizer expansion for the free HALion Sonic SE 3 virtual instrument by Steinberg.
WAVE-LITE is a lightweight but fully functional version of the WAVE ($49.99) wavetable synthesizer by Sample Fuel. It comes with the same core feature set as its big brother but lacks the second wavetable oscillator and includes only 55 program presets (as opposed to over 1,500 presets in the full version). Apart from these limitations, WAVE-LITE is a completely working piece of software without any demo or trial constraints.
The synthesis engine consists of one wavetable oscillator and one noise oscillator, paired up with a set of eighteen built-in effects. The user can load up to 61 effects simultaneously using the AUX channels and assign up to eight Quick Control knobs for accessing the most important synth engine parameters. The presets can be loaded in up to sixteen slots for multi-timbral performance or layered playback. As for the modulation capabilities, WAVE-LITE comes with multiple envelopes and LFOs which can be assigned to different parameters in the modulation editor.
WAVE-LITE requires the freeware HALion Sonic SE 3 virtual instrument to be installed on your computer. We’ve already covered a couple of freely downloadable expansions for HALion Sonic SE 3, including the CRE8 granular synthesizer by Sample Fuel and the Röhrich 12AX7 virtual analog synthesizer by Beat Magazine. You can download HALion Sonic SE 3 completely free of charge from Steinberg’s website and activate it using their software license manager (the USB dongle is not required).

To download your free copy of WAVE-LITE, complete the checkout process on the product page linked below. A valid email address is required. The software is compatible with all VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin host applications on PC and Mac.
WAVE-LITE is available for free download via Sample Fuel (expansion pack for HALion Sonic SE 3, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/VST3/AU/AAX plugin format for Windows & MacOS).
